King Sognare is the deuteragonist in City of Nightmares and the kind-hearted leader of Nightmare City, created by Ricardo Costa Aruijo.

He is the father of Ricky Boom and a Pure Nightmare Creature, though he describes himself as "The Bearer of the Divine Light"; a title he also grants Ricky. Though he couldn't be a father to him during his youth, he was able to connect with his mind whenever his evil brother came to haunt his dreams. Sognare was in a powerless, vegetated state during most of Ricky's life and had to use a blood-related body to move around his soul; and used his oblivious brother as a vessel.

He offered Ricky protection during the night and is the main reason he didn't succumb to his lethal nightmares.

Story

Sognare used to be a human being named "Alexander Zolin". He was born in 1948, Russia, but grew up in Italy, away from his brother. He was a calm and gentle person, and lived his entire life leading and helping others.
In 1968, he met a troubled girl named Marta, who he felt responsible for, then started a relationship with. It didn't last long and Sognare barely got to experience the birth of his son, as he was found and targeted by the murderous Brutto Sogno. It's unsure if the two knew they were brothers at that time.

Sognare was revived as a Nightmare Creature, as he dearly wished to stay alive for his newborn son. He didn't hesitate to make a pact with the ominous demons that had answered his dying breath.
Because of the way he lived his life, he became a Pure and his good nature was kept intact, nevertheless, he experienced trouble remembering his human self after his rebirth. Eventually, he couldn't remember having a son at all and would only focus on reforming Nightmare City. His leadership skills in combination with his unusual powers earned him the role as king, which would catch the attention of the jealous Brutto -also reborn and made a resident of Nightmare City- and again make him his enemy.

Brutto attempted to kill him in order to take over the throne, but as Pure Nightmare Creatures can't be killed by mere Nightmare Creatures, his "death" was just a slumber. With him out of the way, Brutto managed to convince many demons that Sognare was a false king who didn't respect their true nature. His absence didn't allow for him to defend himself and he lost the initial support he had.
Two loyal allies, Gross and Fear, helped resurrect him and unknowingly reunited him with the son he's only ever managed to talk to in his dreams.

Sognare aided Ricky on his own journey to understanding his roots, while he helped his father take care of Brutto. Nevertheless, he ended up getting surrounded by Sandman's army.
